Concluded Season

The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team closed out the 2017-18 campaign last weekend at the 2018 NCAA Rifle National Championships hosted by The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. As a team, the Nanooks placed sixth overall with an aggregate score of 4667 out of the eight programs competing at the championships. Alaska shot a team smallbore score of 2312 on Friday before posting an air rifle score of 2355 on Saturday. The University of Kentucky won their second national championship title on Saturday, dethroning five-time defending national champions West Virginia.

Redshirt-senior Sagen Maddalena was the highest-finishing Nanook on both days, advancing to the individual finals on both Friday and Saturday. Maddalena placed eighth in the smallbore finals before placing fourth in the air gun finals on Saturday.

The Alaska Nanooks men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams also concluded the 2017-18 season on Saturday, competing in the 65th annual NCAA Skiing National Championships hosted by Colorado University in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Alaska finished 14th in the overall team standings with a combined 58 points.

In Thursday’s 5/10km individual-start, classic race, it was senior Ann-Cathrin Uhl (16:26.2) and redshirt-senior Nick Lovett (29:40.0) who led their respected teams with top-25 finishes, while Saturday’s 20/15km mass-start, freestyle race was led by sophomore Anna Darnell (46:32.0) and senior Seiji Takagi (56:54.0).

Last week, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association named senior defenseman Zach Frye to the All-WCHA First Team and freshman forward Steven Jandric to the All-WCHA Rookie Team. @AlaskaNanooksXC’s Maijala Named Junior National Champion
On Saturday, Alaska Nanooks women’s Nordic ski team freshman Anja Maijala captured gold and a junior national championships title by placing first in the women’s 10km freestyle race at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Junior National Cross-Country Ski Championships in Solider Hollow, Utah. Maijala completed the course in 30:09.8 to earn the title.


@NanooksHockey End of the Year Banquet Set for March 30
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will have their end of the year banquet at the Westmark Hotel and Conference Center on Friday, Mar. 30, hosted by the Face-Off Club. Doors open at 6pm and the program is scheduled to start at 6:30pm AKST. The cost for adults is $40 or $30 for kids 12 and under. Furthermore, the Face-Off Club will be hosting a silent auction for the other half of the throwback jerseys that were not auction on the final weekend of the regular season. Alaska Nanooks Day at Lavelle’s Taphouse
Mark your calendars! The Alaska Nanooks and Lavelle’s Taphouse partnered up for a fundraiser on Saturday, April. 21st. One dollar per every beer sold will go directly toward the Alaska Nanooks general scholarship fund and there will be giveaways every hour. More details to come.

In January, the Alaska Nanooks announced that Nanook hockey’s junior defenseman Jack Weiss will miss the remainder of the 2017-18 season to undergo chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. The Alaska Nanooks will keep supporters informed with updates and information on how you can support Weiss throughout the upcoming months. Use the hashtag #StickIt2Cancer to support Jack and his fight.
